Daily Parenting: Having Trouble Introducing New Food to Your Newborn?

Months after you gave birth to your child, it is about time to introduce your newborn to other taste aside from the milk. With all the pieces of excitement that you had, you hurriedly went over to the nearest grocery store and bought a lot for your baby. Going back home, you were staring into the basket of foods you had and wonder which of them could be given to your baby. You know for a fact that your baby had undergone physical development which affects his need for food. As such, you want to know when and what food should you give to your baby as part of your daily parenting responsibilities.

Guide to Baby’s Food Introduction

Here is an excellent outline of the food and the time when you should introduce it to your child.

0-4 Months

At this stage, you must remember that only milk or formula should be given to your baby. NO other baby’s food is allowed. So, how often should you feed your baby with formula? The answer is that there is no exact interval between feeding including breastfeeding. There are signs that you may check to know if your baby needs another bottle of milk. For example, your baby continuously cries even if he or she does not have a fever.

4-6 Months

You have to make a sound judgment and assessment as to whether your baby is ready or not for solid food intake. Some of the primary signs of readiness are (1) ability to hold head up while sitting (2) gained weight and is at least 13 pounds (3) able to close his mouth around spoon and (4) able to make the food move around the mouth; front back to front and vice versa. If so happen that your child got these, you can provide him other foods aside from the baby’s formula. You can have pureed vegetables like sweet potatoes and squash. You may also consider a small amount of unsweetened yogurts provided that it does hot have cow’s milk.

With these kinds of food, you can provide your kid serving with only one teaspoon that is mixed with 4-5 teaspoon of breastmilk or formula.

6-8 Months

Like how you assess the previous age bracket, readiness for other solid foods during this stage is dictated by your kid’s physical development. Aside from the mentioned foods, you can consider pureed or strained fruits and vegetables at this stage. You can choose between bananas, peaches, pears and carrots. 

When providing these foods to your baby, make sure to introduce one meal at a time. You have to wait for about 2-3 days before you give your baby another kind of food. This is to make sure that your child’s system won’t get shocked by the new food he is eating. It would also be advisable to consult your baby’s doctor for the food intake to make sure it won’t do any harm on your baby’s health.

8-10 Months

Your child continues to show signs of readiness to other solid foods. Aside from the ones mentioned earlier, you have to ensure that your child is also able to pick up objects with his thumb or forefinger; get things transferred from on hand to another, and puts his jaw in motion.

As soon as you are confident that all of these are present on your baby, you can introduce additional baby’s foods like pasteurized cheese, mashed vegetables and fruits, finger foods and cereals. The amount to serve by this time is more significant as compared to the previous stages. Here, you can have ¾ to 1 cup of veggies and fruits.

10-12 Months

You know that your baby is ready for other solid food when he can swallow food at this time easier than the previous months. You can also check if your baby can hold the spoon by himself. In addition to the foods listed before, you can introduce your baby to combo foods like macaroni. The same amount of food as that given during the 8-10 months is recommended.
