Cognitive Development Stages: Learning the Deeper Meaning and its Significance

Experiences in a child’s early life are critical to their overall development. Consequently, parents are concerned with what their children come in contact with during these early stages and how it will affect their growth in the main skill areas of development. These skills areas include cognitive, motor/physical, language and communication, and social/emotional skills.

Cognitive development denotes the construction of thought processes, such as problem-solving, remembering, as well as decision-making which starts from childhood up to the adulthood stage. This development refers to the way a person perceives, thinks, and the understanding of the world through the interaction of learned factors.

Why is Cognitive Development Important?

This development helps each child to problem solve,  think, figure things out and explore. If you are a parent, it is essential to foster your little one's development as soon as they are born for the reason that it gives and provides the foundation for each child’s success in life in the future.

Providing them with choices will also be a great help in making thoughtful and rightful decisions for they will be learning about cause and effect. Fostering the child’s development may require certain patience to discover and see the sights on every parent’s part, but rest assured it will ultimately be of assistance to learn and gain knowledge of.

Cognitive Development Stages:

Cognitive development has four distinct stages in children. These will eventually develop children on how the mind processes newly encountered information. These are:

  • Sensorimotor Stage;
  • Preoperational Stage;
  • Concrete Operational Stage; and
  • Formal Operational Stage

  • Sensorimotor Stage – In this stage, an infant through 2 years of age creates a comprehension of himself and realism through communications and interactions with the environment. With this, they will be able to differentiate between the objects in their surroundings and their selves.

    Preoperational Stage – This stage starts at two years old and continues through 7 years old. During this stage, children are not yet proficient to conceptualize abstractly and desires physical circumstances. Objects are categorized in natural methods most likely by the significant aspects. They part take in a symbolic play and learn to manipulate symbols.

    Concrete Operational Stage – This is the stage of cognitive development in which a child is competent in acting upon diversity of mental operations and thoughts using concrete and tangible concepts. It is practiced from 7 to 11 years of age. Concrete operational children know that particular physical features of objects and similar objects correlate even when their outward appearance revolutionizes. It is the stage of a development containing organized and rational thinking.

    Formal Operational Stage – This is the final stage beginning at around 11 or 12 years old and carries through to adulthood. During this stage, an individual expresses the capacity to analyze conditions, taking into contemplation argument and reasoning decisively. Here, it is characterized by being able to demonstrate the ability to think and decide more abstractly and logically. By this stage, an adult person is no longer required to use concrete objects especially in making rational judgments and based on reason decisions. The person in this stage is capable of taking away hypothetical reasoning. His ability to thinking abstractly is much comparable to an adult’s abstract thinking skills.

    After knowing the importance of these four significant stages, parents can both be a challenge and sustain the capabilities and talents as their children mature. Meanwhile, a supportive and sympathetic environment must provide a clear and understandable advantage for the children. It is possible to form a resolution for the deficiencies in cognitive development if their situation is imparted at a certain period.
